Bath

On the way back from a safari in Tanzania, I stopped over in England to break up a long series of flights home.  From London Heathrow, I took a RailLink bus to Reading Station and connected to a train to Bath. Although I spent just one night in Bath before moving on to Salisbury, it would have been better to spend two nights here.

Salisbury

Salisbury is just a short train ride away from Bath.  Although it is most famous for its proximity to Stonehenge, the city itself is a beautiful place. The Cathedral was the most prominent feature.  I spent two nights at the Red Lion Hotel in the center of the town.  Some of the buildings that constitute the hotel dates back to 1220 A.D.  Because of the problem I had with one of the compact flash memory cards, I lost some photos of the city.

Stonehenge

I booked a Stone Circle Access visit with English Heritage in advance so that I could actually walk among the stones.  Without this reservation, one has to stay on a paved path and view Stonehenge from some distance.  My reservation was from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. on May 31.  Since the sunrise was at 4:45a.m., I had arrange a taxi to pick me up at the hotel at 4:30a.m.  Unfortunately it was raining when I arrived at the site, and thus I didn't get to see the sunrise at Stonehenge. However, the weather cleared up somewhat, and the sun came out toward the end of my visit there.

If you have a broadband connection, here is a short video clip (60 seconds) that you might enjoy viewing.
