Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary

Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is a small area around the Kinabatangan River, and it includes endangered flood plain habitats and natural lakes. After touring the Comantang Caves, we checked into the Kinabatangan River Lodge, where we would stay two nights.  We enjoyed viewing wildlife from a riverboat in late afternoons and early mornings.

On the third day, we rode a larger riverboat down the river to the Sulu See and hugged the coast to reach the city of Sandakan where we boarded another boat to reach the Turtle Island.

Selingan Turtle Island

After lunch we transferred to another small boat to head to Selingan Turtle Island to relax on the beach and to view green turtles lay eggs.  Park rangers are on the lookout, and as soon as turtles lay eggs they are collected and taken to the hatchery for incubation.  Hatchlings are released every night.
