Hiroshima

Since I grew up in Hiroshima and lived there until I was sixteen, visits to Hiroshima are special. The Peace Memorial Park, located near the center of the city, is a memorial to those who were killed by the first atomic bomb ever used in a war.

Miyajima

Miyajima is an island in the Hiroshima Bay where Itsukushima Shrine is located.  The shrine was founded in 593 A.D.  The current shrine is believed to be a 16th century replica of the 12th century structures.  It takes only about an hour to reach Miyajima from Hiroshima JR Station by a local train and a ferry (or directly by a ferry from the port of Ujina).
