Growing Phaius

Q Could you please tell me how to grow Phaius'?

A The commonly encountered types of Phaius, such as Phaius tankervilleae and its hybrids, benefit from a well-drained medium that can be quite sandy. They do not require strong light; in fact, a semishaded greenhouse or even an outside area in summer in temperate regions will encourage rapid growth. As is typical with most terrestrial orchids, Phaius should receive organic fertilizers during the warmer months. However, some growers are quite successful with Nutricote slow-release or a liquid fertilizer. The soft succulent leaves attract a variety of pests, especially with plants outdoors under trees, so, if pristine foliage is important to you, maintain a preventative spray program. —Andy Easton.
