Harvest Time

Q Do you have any references on how long I need to leave the seed capsules on a plant of Eriopsis biloba before harvesting?

A  None whatsoever, but common sense should apply. If the plant is an annual bloomer (12-months cycle), I would expect the capsule to be getting close to mature from eight months after pollination. Most plants will try to ripen their capsules prior to opening their next season’s bloom, as the stress of flowering and carrying seed capsules is considerable. Watch the fusion lines or midribs on the seed capsule and, as soon as they become paler and more straw colored than the rest of the capsule, you can be sure they are preparing to separate and release the seeds. Certainly after eight months I would expect you to get good germination and, if you had two capsules the same, you could wait longer with the second one before sowing it, just to be sure. - Andy Easton.
