| Q I
have an orchid called "Encyclia belizensis" that I
recently purchased. The plant is in spike, but it hasn’t bloomed yet.
Could you please send me any information on this orchid or direct me to
where I can find a photograph? A Although the taxonomy of this genus is confused, Encyclia belizense is the generally accepted name. Do not get too excited waiting for the flowers to open because they are fairly drab, but there is an alba form that is greenish white and more attractive. The plant comes from Belize, Honduras and Mexico, so it should be quite comfortable in the Sarasota-area summers, but may need some winter protection. To see a photograph, go to Jay Pfahl’s Web site, www.orchidspecies.com, where the alba form is pictured. A word of caution: The identity of the various pictures, as Pfahl clearly states, is dependent on the knowledge of the contributors, but enthusiasts can often find helpful practical information on culture and habitat for obscure species at this site. I always check the source of the photograph and, if I know the person to be an expert, I am comfortable with the information provided. -- Andy Easton. |
