Choosing Fertilizers

Q I purchased an orchid at the Philadelphia Flower Show. I have two fertilizers, 30-10-10 and 10-50-10. The orchid is in full bloom now. Which fertilizer should I use?

A  With fertilizer it is always my policy to look to the future. The season is coming into spring and normally, when the flowers fade, orchid plants enter a period of rapid growth. I would use the 30-10-10 fertilizer, fairly dilute if you’re growing in doors but at normal orchid strength if you have a greenhouse. It is my opinion that orchids benefit from being fertilized twice as often at half-recommended foliage-plant strength rather than the reverse.
