Cloning Slipper Orchids

Q I never read anything about whether it is possible to clone paphiopedilums or phragmipediums. Is there any printed information on recent research, successes or failures?

A  I certainly haven’t heard of any successes and I guess people are reluctant to publicize their failures. I did see a group of supposedly cloned paphiopedilums in the late 1970s and they were awful. Every one was mutated compared with the original, some grotesquely so. It is my understanding that one of the impediments to research in this field is that a fan is lost when the meristem is taken. However, surely some smart person will crack the technique in due course. Maybe some reader is aware of exciting developments and would be willing to share them with us.
