Habenaria radiata is commonly called Egret Orchid because the flowers resemble egrets in flight. The flower is about 1" (2.5 cm) wide. I finally managed to bloom this Japanese native after a miserable failure last year. I purchased 6 corms from a mail-order spring bulb vendor. All 6 of them sprouted, but only 4 of them are in bloom or in bud now; the other 2 plants did not grow very well even though they are still alive. After last year's failure using sphagnum moss as the planting media, this year I used a 50-50 mix of peat moss and planting soil for ordinary house-plants.
