Web Authoring Software

I am using Microsoft® FrontPage® 2003 to create and maintain this Web site.  My first attempt (published in late October '98) was created with one of the templates supplied by FrontPage 98.  It took only a couple of nights to "slap" the site together, but it took additional several nights to insert over 200 photographs.

Although it was relatively easy to build a site with a built-in template, I found that it placed many limitations on what I really wanted to created.  So, I read the manual supplied by Microsoft® very thoroughly, and I also bought and read another beginner's book published by a third-party.  After gaining a better knowledge of the tools available, I created a new design using  "frames".  Then, I redesigned the site again in June 1999.

In April 2007 I upgraded from Aobe® Creative Suite to Adobe® Creative Suite 3 Web Premium which includes Photoshop CS3, Bridge CS3, Dreamweaver CS3, Fireworks CS3, Flash CS3 Professional, Illustrator CS3, Photoshop CS3, and a few other applications.  I haven't had much time to study many of these applications yet, but I intend to make good use of the suite.

I am using Menu Machine® which allows one to create cascading menus.  I like the cascading menu because it simplifies navigation:

I use Quark Xpress® to create my annual Orchid Calendar.  Although it is a general-purpose publishing software and  not a calendar-creation software, now that I've made up templates, it works out fine. However, I still have to fill in the dates manually because this is not a calendar-creation software.  I'm still using a very old version (Ver. 4.02) because I only use it to create my Orchid Calendar.

To facilitate easier viewing of photos, I created a Java applet that allows a visitor to view orchid and non-orchid photos as Slide Shows.   I am using JBuilder as the development tool.

Also, I use Java scripts to enhance the behavior of this Web site.  For example, the "Orchids of the Month" page allows you to view a larger image by simply moving the mouse cursor over a group of thumnaials.

I first created this web site with Microsoft FrontPage 98, and I have upgraded to FrontPage 2000 and then onto 2002 and 2003, helping Microsoft generate its profits.  Anyone who can use a PC-based word processor and can read and follow instructions should be able to create a simple Web site with FrontPage 2003.

Also, I use Easy Icon Maker to make a small icon that is displayed in the URL box on a browser when you visit my website:
